After the film, as we were walking back to the car, my daughter said she was confused about one part of the story. “Who is Phyllis?” she asked.
We immediately ruled out Phyllis being the dad’s new wife or girlfriend - this is simply not logical. Phyllis could be one of Russell’s mom’s friends. But this is too ordinary and would not explain the awkward silence that takes place before Carl “understands”. Phyllis could be Russell’s psychologist or psychologist, who helps him cope with the divorce. But it seems out-of-place for a psychologist to make known her personal negative opinion about someone close to the patient. Doing so would not be helpful toward Russell coping with his own feelings and would actually justify ill will toward his father. The most plausible theory I’ve come across yet is Phyllis being the mom’s lesbian partner. It would be natural for Phyllis to not like her partner’s ex-husband. This guess also satisfactorily explains the awkward moment before Carl “understands”.

I may have misunderstood the dialogue in the scene where Russell reveals Phyllis is not his mom. According to screenit.com, “Russell states that his dad isn’t home much and is often away, thus not having the time to spend with the boy. He also states that Phyllis isn’t his mom and that she states he (Russell) bothers his dad too much.” In this case, earlier I was wrong, and it would be safe to say Phyllis is Russell’s dad’s new wife or girlfriend.
^^so you are right. uuhhhhmazing aimee. =========================

Okay this is the real thing, I have seen the movie like 5 times and I finally came to a conclusion, since Russell said that Phyllis always tells him to stop bothering his father, you can exclude that it’s her mom’s lesbian partner, but I read a commentary in which the director stated that Phyllis wasn’t a she or a he in fact it was an it, sometime between the divorce of his parents, Russell created an alter ego in which it ate dogs and which explains why he liked dug so much, also when he states that Phyllis tells him to stop bothering his father you can conclude that Russell really wants to become Chuck Norris so he could roundhouse kick his fathers ass back to his mother’s bedroom so yes, anytime now Russell will either kick his father’s ass or marry Megan Fox.
I know my explanation is just so logical now, so I expect an apology from all those idiotic ideas you held, thank you and good night america.
